The presence of Georges Houtstont (1832-1912) in Brussels, from 1862 until his death, coincided with a period of profound urban and architectural change in the capital.
In his studio in Saint-Gilles, Houtstont made plaster models of ornamental elements for façades in Brussels, which were then used for commissioned work. He collaborated with the greatest architects of his time, including Henri Beyaert, Joseph Poelaert, Alphonse Balat and Pierre Jamaer.
Houtstont played a key role in the rise of eclectic architecture in Brussels, and his contribution has had a lasting impact on the face of the city as we know it today.
Lecture in Dutch by: Linda Van Santvoort, PhD in Art History (VUB, 1996), specialist in the architecture of artists’ studios in 19th-century Brussels, former research associate at the Sint-Lukas Archives (1978–1999) and former professor at Ghent University (1999–2018).
